desculpa

Her grandmother was always a strong-minded woman, but Sofia Pratas Morais only began to recognize this strength during the process of photographing her. Perhaps the delay was due to the confusion between strength and aggressiveness or bad temper — and when raising her, her grandmother was always welcoming. But now, the roles have reversed: Sofia is an adult, and her grandmother, with memory loss, returns to a kind of childhood — unfiltered, closer to her essence. And yet, or perhaps because of this, she repeatedly and firmly says “No!” to the camera, in a gesture of self-affirmation.This work raises difficult ethical questions for Sofia, who recognizes that although her grandmother does not understand the concept of public exposure, her discomfort is inherent in the images. Even so, Sofia decides to continue, because she believes that this strength deserves to be shared, and because she knows that it does not affect her. She does so with pride, to honor her.
